Homicide: PA Woman Found Buried In Makeshift Grave Was Beaten To Death

A Ligonier woman whose body was found in a makeshift grave in Westmoreland County died from multiple blunt force trauma injuries, authorities said on Friday, Jan. 17.

Amy Shipley, 45, was discovered on Helens Lane in Cook Township on Sept. 18, 2024, five days after she was reported missing, according to the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office. Her body had been buried on a property belonging to her boyfriend, Roger Angelo, 48, officials said.

Shipley’s autopsy revealed that she suffered extensive injuries, including multiple broken bones in various stages of healing, Coroner Tim Carson reported. Forensic pathologist Dr. Jennifer Hammers determined her death was caused by homicidal violence, including blunt force trauma, and ruled it a homicide.

Investigators believe Shipley was killed in her home on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, before being buried on the Helens Lane property. Angelo, who was expected to face charges of criminal homicide in connection with her death, died by suicide on Sept. 19, 2024, Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli said.

Shipley was reported missing on Sept. 13, 2024, after family and friends had not heard from her for several days. The investigation remains active as Westmoreland County detectives work to gather more details about the circumstances of her death.
